Entering summer, the amount of precipitation increases, and in some low-lying areas, vehicles are prone to soaking in water, which has an extremely adverse impact on the safety of vehicles and goods, as well as the performance of vehicles themselves. What measures should car owners take when the accumulated water recedes?
1. The accumulated water has not crossed the axle
The axle is the component with the smallest ground clearance apart from the tires. Once water accumulates over the axle, the owner should pay attention to the following points:
Check and replace the Gear oil inside the drive axle. Because the housing of the drive axle is generally designed with air holes, if the sealing is poor, the accumulated water will enter the drive axle through the gaps and air holes, causing water emulsion of the oil, lubrication failure and basin tooth damage;
Check if the braking performance of the vehicle is affected, especially the drum axle, which can easily retain foreign objects such as water or sediment, causing a decrease in braking effect or abnormal wear of the braking system. Therefore, if conditions permit, it is best to disassemble the brake drum, clean the sediment inside, and rinse the brake pads with water;
Check if there are any debris in the brake air chamber. The exhaust hole of the dual chamber air chamber is below the water surface, which is prone to water ingress and debris can easily enter, leading to blockage of the air circuit. In severe cases, it can lead to trailer braking failure. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct an inspection as soon as possible after soaking in water;
Inspect the wheel end components, disassemble the wheel end, check for internal water ingress, leakage of sealing rubber rings, contamination or emulsification of oil, etc. If problems occur, timely replace with new components and add new lubricating oil.
2. The accumulated water has flooded the transmission shaft
If a grease nipple is designed on the transmission shaft, remember to check and replace the deteriorated grease after the accumulated water recedes to ensure that the performance of the transmission shaft is not affected. If there are grease fittings on other structures of the vehicle body that have been submerged by water, the grease should also be replaced and filled.
3. The accumulated water has flooded the gearbox
Water ingress can also occur inside the gearbox. Once water ingress occurs, it can cause the valve body and electronic control system to fail, causing the internal oil to deteriorate and lose its lubrication effect. Therefore, after the water accumulation height exceeds the transmission, the vehicle owner must remember not to continue driving, otherwise it may cause more serious damage to the transmission. Therefore, the towing company should be contacted as soon as possible to move the vehicle to a repair shop for inspection and repair.
In addition, when the water accumulates above the gearbox, the suspension is basically unavoidable. If the owner uses an air suspension, remember to clean the airbags and shock absorbers. At the same time, ask the repair shop to check and adjust the height of the electronic control system and air suspension to avoid uneven inflation and inconsistent height.
4. The accumulated water has flooded the engine
Engine flooding is a relatively serious and difficult problem to deal with, and car owners need to replace the engine oil and filter; Check the position of exposed bearings such as fans and belt tensioners, and replace them if necessary; Check the entire vehicle's electronic control harness for rust and replace corresponding accessories in a timely manner; The gas pipeline joints, quick release valves, handshake valves, and water vapor inside the gas pipeline should also be cleaned together; At the same time, it is necessary to check whether the vehicle's air drying tank has water ingress, and blow dry the water vapor in the air path with compressed air.
The main attention of the car is that once the water level exceeds the engine, even if the water recedes, the engine must not be started to avoid causing secondary damage and affecting the insurance company's compensation. If the vehicle needs to be moved, please contact the towing company.
In addition, car owners also need to check the fuel tank and vehicle urea tank on time, especially after a long period of heavy rain, even if the vehicle has not been soaked in water, the oil and vehicle urea should be checked, because any problem with either container can cause the vehicle to stall.
It is recommended that car owners who frequently enter and exit rainy areas purchase corresponding insurance, such as "raising soldiers for a thousand days and using them for a while". If the vehicle is flooded, they need to contact the insurance company in a timely manner:
1. Do not start the vehicle after water ingress;
2. Take photos on site and also capture the license plate number;
3. Call the insurance company to report the case (be sure to report the case within 24 hours);
4. Call the rescue trailer, tell the insurance company where the car is in the repair shop, and ask the surveyor to investigate;
5. Before repairing, report and verify the loss to the insurance company as required.
