The trailer axle is a typical driven axle, also known as a support axle, whose main function is to provide sufficient bearing capacity for the vehicle, while also taking into account trailer braking, shock absorption, and maintaining driving. In general, the strength of the axle beam of a vehicle bridge is often directly related to the overall load-bearing capacity.
The common trailer axle is mostly a hollow bridge, with its axle beam hollowed out at the center and can be divided into square and circular shafts. The circular tube is directly fed from the seamless steel pipe, while the square tube is obtained from the foundation of the circular tube through the square pushing process. According to different axle models, the wall thickness parameters of the axle beams also vary, and the thickness of the selected seamless steel pipes varies from a few millimeters to over twenty millimeters. The reason why it is designed as a hollow bridge is also the result of comprehensive consideration of factors such as engineering mechanics and vehicle economy, ensuring the bearing capacity of the vehicle bridge while minimizing its own weight as much as possible.
Many car owners are often asked about the wheelbase when choosing an axle, in order to ensure that the selected axle matches the vehicle model better. How can this parameter be measured accurately?
Simply put, track width refers to the distance between the tires on both sides of the trailer, or more precisely, the distance between the center points of the tire force on both ends of the axle. If it is a twin structure, the distance between the centers of the twin tires on both sides can be measured. This may be quite obscure, as shown in the following figure:
Since we mentioned the track width, let me also mention several other common parameters and names on the rear axle of the trailer:
Suspension center distance: The distance between suspension support points.
Wheel mounting surface spacing: The distance between the two ends of the axle body used to contact the wheel mounting surface.
Drum brake shaft assembly: a combination of shaft body, brake base plate, brake chamber bracket, camshaft bracket, etc.
Disc brake shaft assembly: a combination of shaft body, brake base plate, etc.
Wheel hub assembly: A rotating component that connects the wheel and axle body, mainly bearing the load between the wheel and axle body. It can be composed of a wheel hub, bearings, oil seals, axle head nuts, end caps, etc.
